With a special focus on enhancing the regulatory environment, the Government of Lithuania has declared its intention to make Lithuania the first choice for FinTech businesses. In pursuing this objective, the Government and the Bank of Lithuania, the financial market supervisory authority, have put extra effort into attracting both startup and existing FinTech companies from other EU and non-EU countries to establish their businesses in Lithuania. Lithuania has passed amendments to its banking legislation introducing a new type of the so called “specialised banks”. The new legal framework entered into force on the 1st January 2017.
